Collage Landscape: The Dreamer

I got the inspiration for this piece from Wangechi Mutu's works with her representation of human body and psyche. This piece is about deeply routed military/violent nationalism present in American society since its inception. I arranged my collage in a way that made it look like the words and weapons' were flowing out of the mans head representing the thoughts of American society. To make sure that I conveyed that that this man was America as a whole and not just an American I replaced his eyes with the America flag to show him not as man but an idea. The reason I named the piece The Dreamer is America is often seen as the place where dream comes true, a central force in world power and they look into the future with wide eyes and imagine the new possibilities of what’s next. The problem with dreamers is they can be narrow mined in achieving their dreams that they forget about the past and present and only look towards the future. America always looks towards the future, but always seemingly forget or ignore their troubled past and try to move on without addressing it.
